The best coffee shops in Paris

The coffee scene in Paris has progressed in leaps and bounds in the last ten years. (Not to mention the last fifty, as post-war Paris clung with a certain intensity to chicory long after the ration years of World War II had passed.)

The most joyful part of these coffee shops for me? That the owners and staff started to recognize us as regulars. They remembered us and greeted us with increasingly cheery bonjours with each encounter. To me these moments of connection are the benefit of longer-term travel abroad.

In the PDF below are my seven absolute favorite coffee shops in Paris right now. I’ve linked each spot in the list on page 1. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Not a coffee drinker? The tea and hot chocolate at Bontemps Pâtisserie are excellent. Five years ago I would have raved about the hot chocolate at Angelina’s. But, when I went back this most recent trip, I was disappointed. The hot chocolate was still delicious but the presentation and service left a metaphorical bad taste in my mouth. However, I did love chatting with the grande dame at the table next to me, who assured me that the hot chocolate was still as good as when she was a girl and her grandmother took her to Angelina’s. She hadn’t been back to Angelina’s in more than 50 years, but this happy memory had stuck with her.
